The IATA data sharing standard in air cargo

Data exchange is the key to a paperless and highly efficient supply chain. To achieve this, all parties need to share high quality data at an early stage. Since this is not possible with existing methods, the industry has come together to create ONE Record, an open, free and modern data sharing standard.

What is ONE Record?

ONE Record, the new IATA standard, is revolutionizing logistics data exchange, replacing outdated Cargo IMP and XML systems. It ensures immediate, direct access to enriched, unified records for all logistics participants - from shippers to consignees - eliminating outdated, inaccurate data exchange methods. It also introduces the sharing of new types of data, such as digital consignment notes and temperature tracking, paving the way for a more transparent, error-free, and efficient supply chain. The adoption of ONE Record promises to improve process optimization, increase visibility and collaboration, and significantly reduce lead times and operational costs.

How does ONE Record work?

ONE Record introduces a cohesive data model that seamlessly integrates all elements of the supply chain, enabling the seamless exchange of information across diverse IT systems and formats. It uses linked data principles, assigning unique web addresses to each piece of shipment information for real-time data retrieval and updates by authorized parties. This method eliminates data redundancy, as each partner maintains and shares information via secure links on their servers. This innovation ensures efficient, synchronized access to shipment status, improving the accuracy and speed of supply chain operations.

Why do we need ONE Record?

ONE Record offers several advantages over existing messaging standards, including increased efficiency, reduced costs, improved collaboration, enhanced customer satisfaction and a more robust future-proof solution. That is why Lufthansa Cargo is investing in the implementation of ONE Record and is shaping the future of air cargo together with its partners.

The requirements of modern data exchange are no longer met by the existing messaging standards Cargo IMP and Cargo XML. EDI messages are text-only and sometimes character-limited, which means information cannot always be fully exchanged. Different message versions can also result in different information levels, causing cargo handling problems or delays. Furthermore, accompanying documents or photos of shipments cannot be exchanged electronically.

What is Lufthansa Cargo currently working on?

We want to play an active role in shaping change and would be delighted if you would like to join us as a partner in one or more use cases - because only together can we move into the future. 

We are currently working on the following use cases:

As a first step towards a comprehensive ONE Record infrastructure, Lufthansa Cargo provides status information on freight shipments.
This will create a shipment-related information channel that will initially map the existing status information but can be enriched in the future with IOT data, evidence, and additional information, depending on the data requested by partners and customers.

The ONE Record good practices for this use case can be retrieved here.

The goal of this use case is to share (M)AWB and HAWB data via ONE Record with shippers, forwarders, ground handlers and other involved partners and to derive an IATA good practice. This also includes the design of the "Change Request" process, which allows data changes to be requested from the data owner

As part of this use case, the exchange of electronic accompanying documents between shippers, freight forwarders, ground handlers, and other involved parties will be developed. Accompanying documents are, for example dangerous goods declarations, customs documents and control documents that are sent with the freight. ONE Record enables the transfer of this data in electronic form so that the accompanying documents can be sent in paperless form in the future
