20 years of flying fresh

The Perishable Center Frankfurt is celebrating its 20-year anniversary. Lufthansa Cargo offers their congratulations.

Whether it's Asparagus from Peru, meat from Argentina or flowers from Kenya... Europe's largest centre for temperature-controlled logistics covers 9,000 square metres and has handled up to 700 tonnes of fresh goods every day for the last two decades. In order to ensure perfect storage conditions for perishable goods, there are 20 temperature-controlled areas in total, ranging from -24 degrees Celsius to +24 degrees Celsius. Around 120 employees take care to ensure that the delicate cargo is transported as quickly as possible from the aircraft to the halls and from there, on its onward journey throughout Europe. 96 per cent of the goods even leave the PCF on the very same day they arrive.

Thanks to the Perishable Center, Lufthansa Cargo has an ideal partner at their side, enabling them to bring high-quality fresh produce to their customers in the shortest time. The cargo subsidiary of Lufthansa is the only airline to be represented by their own Competence Team in the PCF, which coordinates the loading process and ensures the goods are of the best quality. "This more intensive collaboration has been in place since 2012", reminisces Oliver Blum, Head of Operations Fresh/td.

Numerous projects have been completed together in the past. The most recent of these was the introduction of the vacuum cooler, which chills the flowers effectively and quickly, thereby keeping them fresh for longer. The objective? The best possible quality. In addition to this, the desire to strengthen and further the Frankfurt site is one of the targets the two companies want to achieve together. "I look forward to the coming years and wish the Perishable Center continued success in the future", says Oliver Blum and adds, "with Lufthansa Cargo by their side."
