Dear Customers and Partners,
“Sweet Dream” and “Darling”: remarkable names and a remarkable transport challenge. I have had the privilege of being a part of many special shipments in my 16 years at Lufthansa Cargo, but two panda bears are a real highlight. For us, sharing responsibility for this transport was also acknowledgment of our long-standing expertise in species-appropriate animal transport. We were delighted to contribute our extensive experience to this partnership with the zoo.
The scheduled flight from Beijing to Frankfurt was diverted especially for Meng Meng and Jiao Qing. The new route? Chengdu to Berlin. In doing so, my colleague Hasso Schmidt and his associates in China, as well as Wolfgang Handke and his Berlin-based team, were also able to demonstrate our skills and abilities even outside of the major hubs we regularly serve. But there was one slight disadvantage to the diversion: The direct flight meant that the pandas unfortunately did not have the opportunity to get to know our Frankfurt Animal Lounge.
Our Frankfurt Animal Lounge is one of the most modern airport animal stations in the world – a first-class lounge for animal passengers. Since 2008, we have been accommodating the various animal flyers passing through Frankfurt at our animal station. Special care was taken during the design process to make sure animals have the most pleasant and comfortable stay possible. With a surface area of around 4,000 m2, it combines all services – handling, animal coordination and veterinarians – under one roof. At the same time, the Frankfurt Animal Lounge meets all standards regarding protection from animal diseases, since it is also a point of entry to the European Union for a large number of animals. With 42 large-animal stalls, 39 dog pens, special climate chambers and blacklight tanks for examining ornamental fish, we have the right solution for every animal. The entire building is video-monitored, and only authorized specialist staff is allowed to enter. Your animal’s safety is guaranteed here.
The optimal, all-inclusive service available with Live/td, our special product for animals, includes accommodation in our Animal Lounge and transport in special containers developed in cooperation with breeders and veterinarians, as well as intensive care by trained staff in the air and on the ground. Fish are the animals we transport most, followed by pets of all kinds. Often due to their size alone, zoo animals are a special challenge – but one we enjoy taking on.
I look forward to hopefully being able to welcome Meng Meng and Jiao Qing on board with us once again, shortly before I retire, when they return to China in 15 years.
Who are the people behind this picture?
In the picture, you can see part of our Frankfurt Animal Lounge team – proud of the Industry Partner Award, which we received last year from the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA). We are a unit of coordinators, animal keepers, handling specialists and product managers. There is one thing we all have in common: a passion for animals.
What does the Frankfurt Animal Lounge team stand for?
We take care of looking after the animals that are starting or ending their journey with us, or are on a layover. We are passionately committed to their well-being on their journey. For example, we make sure they get to their flight on time for departure, that ground transport takes place in special vehicles – some of them climate controlled – or that they get a light snack before they go to their connecting flight. Here too, the rule of thumb is not to travel on a full stomach. Our team of experts with years of experience organizes a smooth transport experience.
In a nutshell: What drives you?
The responsibility and passion for our animal passengers.
What has been the highlight of your time at the Animal Lounge so far?
Every animal is important to us. Still, certain shipments stand out in particular, such as full charters with horses, since the preparation and handling calls for careful logistics planning, and because they are simply a wonderful thing. And then there was Jeremy the rhinoceros, who moved to a new zoo to help protect his species.
What have you always wanted to say to our customers and partners?
Many of our colleagues own animals themselves and know that it is difficult to put their animals in someone else’s hands. Every day, we go the extra mile to make your animal feel right at home with us. So we thank you for your trust!
Lufthansa Cargo transports pandas from China to Berlin.
“Welcome to Bearlin!” was the message at Berlin’s Schönefeld airport in late June, when Meng Meng and Jiao Qing landed in their new home on LH 8415, which had been diverted just for the occasion. Befitting the event, the airport fire department greeted our MD-11F with a water salute. On the tarmac, the crew waved German and Chinese flags from the cockpit in front of some 30 media representatives.
The two black-and-white bears from the Far East looked around with interest during unloading, clearly having enjoyed the twelve-hour flight from Chengdu – partly thanks to the first-class treatment they received, including round-the-clock care from the zoo’s head veterinarian, Dr. Andreas Ochs, and two accompanying Chinese keepers. Before the flight, Dr. Andreas Ochs took a moment to describe the details of the transport: “Meng Meng and Jiao Qing are provided with plenty of bamboo snacks during the flight. They also have water to drink, of course. We are able to visit the bears at all times throughout the journey to make sure they are okay.” The transport crate was also lined with absorbent mats just in case nature called, so that the pandas were able to enjoy their journey in comfort with no unwelcome odors.
After enjoying a few days to adjust to their new surroundings, Meng Meng and Jiao Qing were welcomed to their new habitat at Zoo Berlin by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both emphasized that the pandas were also a symbol of the good relationships between Germany and China. China is also one of our most important markets, and we are delighted to underscore the close relationship with our transport. “Sweet Dream” and “Darling” – the English translations of their names – have since taken to life at Zoo Berlin and are attracting thousands of visitors.

Lufthansa Caro is now providing a one-of-a-kind service in the airfreight industry for temperature-sensitive cargo. Effective immediately, your Cool/td Passive shipments will be protected by a specially developed protective film.
This custom reflective film helps keep freight cool by working like tinted windows on a car. The film reflects and deflects direct sunlight, providing even better protection for temperature-sensitive goods, which are usually already packed in insulated materials, and reducing solar-induced temperature increases by up to 20 degrees Celsius.
The new service is used worldwide on all pallets with Cool/td Passive shipments. And the best part is, it is completely free of charge for you.
