“Good Day, USA” – take off to America!

Following the official welcome event with 1,800 guests on 19 November, it was time for the brand new freighter to make its maiden commercial flight to the US.

Around 5:50 p.m., flight LH 8170 was ready for push-back! Lufthansa Cargo’s first “Triple Seven” rolled towards the runway, passing by Terminal 1 at its home airport. With a takeoff weight of 286 tonnes and a speed of 166 knots, it headed off on its maiden flight towards New York’s JFK airport. The flight to New York was reminiscent of the world’s first ever flight of a Lufthansa cargo jumbo to the City That Never Sleeps more than forty years ago.
Just a few hours later, delighted Lufthansa Cargo employees welcomed the “Good Day, USA”. In spite of the wind and weather, many Lufthansa workers wanted to be there for the first landing of their new aircraft. It rolled to its parking position with great applause and the traditional water baptism by the New York airport’s fire department. Following a short breather, a crew change and, of course, loading and unloading, the aircraft flew on to Atlanta, Georgia.

The crew were greeted there with “Welcome to Atlanta” from station manager Carl Unger, one of the first to board the brand new aircraft. Numerous employees had waited with him until well after midnight to celebrate the arrival of the new addition to the fleet.

The second Boeing 777F has now arrived at its new home airport as well. The “Jambo Kenya” landed in Frankfurt on 27 November at 5:50 a.m. local time. Both brand new freighters will be deployed on routes to North America in the winter schedule.
