Flight against famine

Wings of Help, Lufthansa Cargo, PAYBACK and partners ship 90 tonnes of relief aid  to East Africa

In a concerted action, the Wings of Help aid organisation, Lufthansa Cargo and many other partners dispatched an emergency flight to Nairobi during the month. On board the MD-11 freighter were 90 tonnes of urgently needed medicaments and food for the famine-stricken people in East Africa.
“The generosity of the German people and industry is inspirational when help is needed“, said Lufthansa Cargo Chairman Karl Ulrich Garnadt. The Chairman underlined the importance of direct aid. “It is imperative that relief supplies are transported quickly and efficiently to Africa. It is only natural that we should help in this human catastrophe”, he said. “Together with the Wings of Help aid organisation and PAYBACK, Lufthansa Cargo is ensuring that the relief aid on board the flight arrives precisely where it is momentarily so urgently needed.”

That support from every corner is welcome in the efforts to overcome the dire impact of famine in Kenya was evidenced by the huge media interest when the Flight against Famine landed in Nairobi.
“The appalling scenes of people suffering from famine in the Horn of Africa have touched a depth of feeling in the German population and spurred their generosity in providing help“, observed Frank Franke, President of the Wings of Help, addressing the Kenyan media.

Frank Franke, who was on the flight and present when the relief supplies were distributed, emphasised before the flight: “The solidarity shown in our Country by private donors and industry is truly impressive. The people in Germany have not forgotten what it is to suffer need. “
In Somalia, the famine is threatening around 3.7 million people. Children are dying by the minute, mothers are reaching the refugee camps after being forced to leave their weakened children behind on the tortuous trek there.

The MD-11 flight left Frankfurt for Nairobi at 2.05 hours on 17 August. It touched down seven hours later at 10.40 hours. Distribution of the aid then went ahead in cooperation with the International Medical Corps.
