MD-11 conquers the Amazonas

Since 21 January 2011 Lufthansa Cargo connects the Brasilian city Manaus (MAO) twice a week with the worldwide network of the company. The first Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 from VCP (São Paulo/Campinas) landed at Eduardo Gomes Airport in Manaus on 22 January.

Manaus, capital of the state of the Amazonas, lies deep in the Brazilian jungle. Hours from the coast and other urban conurbations, the city has a population approaching two million but is virtually only accessible by air. Since the establishment of a free trade zone here in the 1960s, the city has proved a magnet for many international companies, especially in the high-tech industry. Components are flown in from Asia and Europe, assembled at plants in Manaus and sold across South America.

After a two-hour ground stop the Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 departed to Quito, another highlight on the South American continent, which Lufthansa Cargo has served since May 2009.

You will find more information about the Lufthansa Cargo network in South America here.
