Similar to the authorities of the United States, the UK Department for Transport has issued a direction concerning the transportation of cargo and mail in general and concerning ink and toner cartridges. The direction is already in effect and is supposed to end on December 2nd, 2010. The requirements can be summarized as follows:
A) No items more than 6 mm in thickness / 250 g in total weight shall be flown into the UK if they originate in Yemen or Somalia (cargo and mail). This is already covered by the current general embargo Lufthansa Cargo had to impose on cargo and mail from both countries.
B) Any ink and toner cartridges weighing more than 500 g from countries other than Yemen or Somalia may not be flown into the UK. There are no detailed instructions to receive any supporting documents from customers or to have any statements on the Master AWB. So please scrutinize all shipping documents for relevant information and alert your business partners and operational staff including those screening consignments of cargo and mail.
C) For shipments originating in the UK, if they contain any ink and toner cartridges weighing more than 500g, these must originate from an UK or EU Known Consignor in accordance with Reg. (EC) 300/2008 resp.185/2010. Any ink and toner cartridges weighing 500 g or less are not restricted.
Should the direction be prolonged beyond December 2nd, 2010, Lufthansa Cargo will advise of any changes or new information that may be received from the regulatory authorities.
